In U2 by U2, Bono describes "'A Man And A Woman' was about rediscovering a kind of flirtatious and romantic love, when you were younger and less sure-footed in the ways that love can take you. It's that dance around the subject, seduction, that beautiful flirtation, which is in the end the most sexual thing, the not knowing, the not going there. Men and women seem to want to trample that mysterious distance that lies between us. I'm intrigued by it, it keeps me interested.”
To me, this song is a very deep song, especially when I listen to it now, with my faith restored and a different maturity of what it means to be a man. The the following lyrics strike me as Bono writes:
“I could never take a chance
Of losing love to find romance
In the mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman
No, I could never take a chance
'Cause I could never understand
The mysterious distance
Between a man and a woman
You can run from love
And if it's really love it will find you
Catch you by the heel
But you can't be numb for love
The only pain is to feel nothing at all
How can I hurt when I'm holding you?”
Contrast with the following scripture from Ephesians 5:25-33: “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.”
In today’s day and age, we are all too quick to throw one another away. Men and women are quick to judge, move on and we very seldom do the inner work that is required biblically to transform our hearts and minds. This song is a great reminder to me that the grass is not always greener on the other side, that losing love to find romance may not always be the best choice. Sometimes, doing the work on our own hearts, working on communication and conflict resolution from a solid biblical framework, pushes through those obstacles, and teaches a man to love a woman like Christ loves a church, and brings a woman into her femininity, as well as bringing her out into her true help mate form.
Coming from the new age side of things, I see the church failing in this regard, and again, we have to evaluate this on three levels. The physical, psychological/soul wound, and the demonic. If the church can rise up to this level again, marriages and people can begin to thrive again, but it is going to take some strong discernment and true leadership and getting out of the pharisee like thinking that the church leadership is caught up currently to get back to the original gospel and what Jesus had in mind for his people.
In closing, meditate and pray on how this song and scripture might help you grow closer toward those you love.
